Plain Language Summary

# Smoke Exposure Research Act Summary **What the Bill Does:** The Smoke Exposure Research Act would direct the federal Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to study how wildfire smoke damages wine grapes and the wine produced from them. The research would focus on identifying which smoke compounds cause "smoke taint" (an undesirable flavor that ruins wine quality), developing standardized ways to test for smoke damage, and creating tools to help winemakers prevent or reduce these problems. The ARS would partner with universities in California, Oregon, and Washington that already have expertise in this area. **Who It Affects:** This bill primarily affects wine grape growers and winemakers in western states experiencing increasing wildfire smoke exposure, along with the regional agricultural economy that depends on wine production.

Consumers could eventually benefit from improved methods to protect wine quality. The research costs would be borne by federal taxpayers through the USDA. **Current Status:** The bill was introduced by Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) in the 119th Congress and is currently in committee, meaning it has not yet been debated or voted on by the full Senate. No action has been taken on it since introduction.
