Plain Language Summary

# Food Security and Farm Protection Act Summary **What the bill would do:** This bill would prevent states and local governments from imposing agricultural production rules on farms in other states. For example, if one state wanted to require certain environmental or animal welfare standards for produce or meat sold within its borders, it couldn't enforce those rules on out-of-state farms—only on farms within its own state. The bill allows only federal standards and the rules of the state where the farm is actually located to apply. **Who it affects:** The bill primarily impacts farmers, agricultural businesses, and food producers in interstate commerce. It would also affect state and local governments that currently set their own agricultural standards.

Consumers in states with strict food production rules could be affected if those rules no longer apply to imported agricultural products. **Key provisions and current status:** The bill includes a "private right of action," meaning farmers or companies could sue in federal court if they believe a state or local regulation violates this law. Currently, the bill is in committee and has not yet been voted on by the full Senate. No action has been taken since its introduction.
