Pay Our Military Act of 2025
Pay Our Military Act of 2025
Plain Language Summary
# Pay Our Military Act of 2025 - Summary **What the bill would do:** This bill ensures that military members and Defense Department employees continue to be paid during a government shutdown. If Congress fails to pass a full budget for fiscal year 2025, this legislation would automatically provide funding to pay active-duty service members, military reserves, civilian Defense Department workers, and contractors who support military operations. The emergency funding would last until either Congress passes a regular budget or January 1, 2026, whichever comes first. **Who it affects:** The bill directly impacts military personnel (active duty and reserves), civilian employees of the Department of Defense, and defense contractors. Indirectly, it affects military families who depend on paychecks and the continuity of military operations.
It also includes Coast Guard personnel and their support staff, since the Coast Guard falls under the Department of Homeland Security during shutdown situations. **Current status:** The bill was introduced by Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) and is currently under committee review in the 119th Congress. It has not yet been voted on or passed. The bill addresses a recurring issue during government shutdowns, when non-essential workers are furloughed but debates have occurred over whether military pay should continue during budget impasses.
